Nioh 3 is a 2026 action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. The third main installment in the acclaimed masocore series, the game trades the linear mission structure of its predecessors for an expansive “open-field” design. Set during an alternate Warring States and Bakumatsu period, the plot follows Tokugawa Takechiyo, a customizable protagonist poised to become Japan’s next Shogun. However, when his jealous younger brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, surrenders his soul to evil yokai, Takechiyo must transcend through time to cleanse the corrupted lands and save Japan from demonic chaos.

Developed using the Katana Engine, the game builds upon the foundations of Team Ninja’s past titles like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Rise of the Ronin. Announced in June 2025 during Sony’s State of Play, it features a groundbreaking dual-style combat system allowing players to seamlessly switch between traditional Samurai combat and a highly agile Ninja style. Nioh 3 was released globally for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam on February 6, 2026. A Season Pass including two major story expansions is also planned, with the first arriving by September 2026.

GAMEPLAY

Nioh 3 evolves the franchise’s signature masocore combat by introducing a groundbreaking style-shift mechanic. With a tap of a button, players can instantly swap between two distinct gameplay styles: Samurai and Ninja. The Samurai style retains the series’ traditional, deliberate combat, utilizing varied weapon stances (High, Mid, Low) and the crucial “Ki Pulse” timing system to manage stamina mid-combo. The newly introduced Ninja style trades heavy defense for extreme maneuverability, allowing players to execute rapid acrobatic strikes, deploy unique shinobi tools, and chip away at enemies from afar.

The game’s open-field world structure encourages vast exploration, rewarding players with vital upgrades, loot, and hidden encounters. Unlike the rigid mission select screens of the past, players can freely explore environments, naturally scaling their power to overcome the game’s notoriously steep difficulty curve. Deep customization returns, allowing players to fine-tune their separate Samurai and Ninja loadouts, weapon skill trees, and Guardian Spirits.

Gathering Soul Cores from defeated yokai remains a core mechanic, enabling Takechiyo to briefly summon demons to unleash devastating magical abilities in battle. Shrines act as checkpoints across the expansive map, where players can level up, offer items, and prepare for brutal, complex boss fights against challenging human warlords and terrifying mythological entities. The game also supports online multiplayer for up to three players to tackle the hardest challenges together.

STORY

Nioh 3 features a gripping time-travel narrative that spans multiple eras of Japanese history, including the turbulent Sengoku and Bakumatsu periods. Players take on the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo, a highly customizable 17th-century warrior who is on the precipice of being christened as Japan’s next Shogun.

However, this ascension deeply enrages his younger brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu. Consumed by jealousy and an unquenchable thirst for power, Kunimatsu surrenders his soul to malevolent yokai forces, plunging the entire nation into a nightmarish, demon-infested war. To stop his brother and restore peace, Takechiyo must harness both his samurai heritage and deadly ninja arts.

The journey forces the protagonist to transcend time, revisiting key historical eras to cleanse corrupted souls and battle rival daimyos who have been twisted by demonic influence. As Takechiyo unravels the mystery behind the sudden yokai invasion, the story explores the heavy emotional burden of leadership and the tragic consequences of a family torn apart by ambition, culminating in an epic clash for the soul of Japan.
