Aliens: Dark Descent Game Details

Aliens: Dark Descent is a real-time strategy video game developed by Tindalos Interactive in collaboration with Disney’s 20th Century Games and published by Focus Entertainment. Set in the Alien franchise, the game was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on June 20, 2023.

GAMEPLAY

Dark Descent is a real-time strategy video game played from a top-down perspective. Players need to issue commands to a squad of four colonial marines, who must battle the Xenomorphs and rogue agents from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The game features five starting character classes, each with their own unique weapons and abilities. While combat happens in real time, players can briefly slow time to a crawl in order to issue commands or set up an ambush. Players are encouraged to explore the moon station, discovering short cuts and deploying motion trackers which allows players to track alien movements. They can also use an electrical saw to open locked doors, or weld a door shut as they retreat from one room to another. The changes to level layout are permament. Welding a door may stop the Xenomorphs from advancing, but it may also block the player’s route in subsequent visits.

Between missions, players can upgrade and customize their characters. Players need to maintain not only the physical health but also the mental health of these characters. Each character has their own mental traits. Their combat performance may be affected if they were put under too much strain. They may miss their shots, behave irrationally, or even sabotage the player’s mission. Squad members may die permanently after being attacked. Players can evacuate during a mission to prevent losing the entire squad. According to the developer, each mission in the game lasts “anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour”.

STORY

In the year 2198, on the moon of Lethe, the USS Otago is entering Lethe’s atmosphere to undergo its shakedown run. Meanwhile, on Pioneer Station, the Brettonville shuttle docks on Pioneer to drop off its cargo. An infiltrator unlocks the crates, revealing them to contain facehuggers and at least one Warrior Xenomorph. Deputy Administrator Maeko Hayes detects the unusual request of the Brettonville to leave early, and requests that it be kept, but her supervisor McDonald refuses. Hayes, seeing scenes of carnage in the Docking Bay on her cameras, enters the bay and finds the crew dead, and is forced to weld the door shut As the Brettonville attempts to leave, McDonald and everyone else in the control room aside from Hayes is attacked and impregnated by facehuggers. Hayes narrowly escapes, and reluctantly activates the Cerberus protocol, a Weyland Yutani planetary quarantine procedure intended to prevent any ships from entering or leaving Lethe, to stop the Brettonville which she realizes the Xenomorphs emerged in its cargo, from leaving the system. The protocol also destroys the Otago. Hayes is attacked by a Warrior Xenomorph, but is saved by Sergeant Jonas Harper and his squad of Colonial Marines. Harper’s team and Hayes escape the station and set off after the crashed Otago, where they find it badly damaged. Harper is granted command of the remaining Marines, and Hayes becomes the person in charge of the bridge. The Marines enter Dead Hills, where they discover and kill a Xenomorph Queen under the colony. After scouting Berkley’s Docks to look for parts to repair the Otago, the Marines encounter members of a cult named the Darwin Era, who are fighting against Weyland Yutani. Upon returing, Hayes reveals to Harper her role in activating Cerberus, which briefly causes a rupture between the two.

Harper traces the containers transporting the Xenomorphs around the planet to Olduvai, the planet’s main Trimonite refinery. Descending into the mines, they encounter the cultists, who can walk amongst the Xenomorphs without being attacked. Harper mentions a Cassandra, before the leader of the cult begins to address the squad and Harper directly, introducing himself as Joseph Marlow, a former Weyland Yutani scientist, along with revealing Cassandra is working with him. Hayes abandons her original plan to send a signal into space, when she uses her intended satellite as a bomb to rescue the Marines just as they are overrun by the Xenomorphs. Harper reveals to Hayes that Cassandra is his daughter. The Otago is attacked by the Xenomorphs, but the Marine fight them off. Harper reveals to Hayes his flashes and visions he gets when encountering the Xenomorphs, and admits he is unnerved by them. They are contacted by Director Price of Pharos Spire, overall leader of Weyland Yutani’s operations on Lethe, who reveals the Cerberus Protocol is entering Phase 2, dropping a large amount of nukes on the surface of Lethe, in order to wipe out the Xenomorphs. The Marines storm Pioneer Station, and kill a Xenomorph Queen, in an attempt to deactivate the Cerberus Protocol, but the attempt to abort it fails because of a Weyland Yutani special order, leaving the Marines little time to repair the Otago and get it space worthy before the surface is nuked. A stronger shield will be required before they can break through Cerberus, and the hypersleep chambers will need to be repaired. Price offers the power core of an atmospheric processor, in exchange for allowing access to the Otago, and revealing that Harper’s daughter, Cassandra is still alive.

The Marines raid the Atmospheric Processor, stealing its Power Core and killing another Queen and recovering an APC, but Harper is overcome by his flashes. Under Hayes’s advice, Harper talks with Doctor Bookard, in charge of Medical, and she gives him sedatives, while revealing that the flashes are actually telepathic messages from the Xenomorphs that occur when he is in their proximity. In order to repair hypersleep, the Marines salvage an old vessel used during a prior rebellion against Weyland Yutani, where one of the cultists surrenders, and encourages Harper to join the cult. When imprisoned, the cultist reveals that Cassandra is being used in an experiment that allows the cultists to communicate with the Xenomorphs telepathically, and that Harper has this power as well, along with revealing that Cassandra is still in Marlow’s hands, before the chestburster erupts from the cultist and kills him.

Infuriated, Harper confronts Price, who reveals that Theo Stern, who was supposed to have recovered Cassandra by now, but they have lost contact at an underground lab. The Marines infiltrate the lab and play a video, confirming that Marlow has taken Cassandra to an unknown location, and that her powers allow humanity a link to the Xenomorphs. They also recover Theo Stern, the head of Price’s mercenaries. During an alarm, they capture Marlow and bring him to the APC, where a livid Harper demands Cassandra’s location, but Marlow refuses to answer, causing Harper to shoot him in the leg, revealing Marlow to be an android. The android reveals that Cassandra shares Harper’s psychic link to the Xenomorphs and that the pain is much worse for her. Harper then shoots the android dead, before falling unconscious. Dr Becker of the Research Lab betrays the Marines, shutting off comms, defenses, and structural integrity of the Otago, before releasing the fully grown Xenomorph that emerged from the cultist. Hayes attempts to kill the Xenomorph in the decontamination cell, but the creature survives and kills Dr Bookard in front of Hayes. Becker reveals he is in league with Price, who sends a team of commandos to take the Otago, but Hayes fights them off in the ARC, killing them and destroying their gunship. Becker attempts to kill Hayes, but the Xenomorph arrives and kills him. Hayes lures the Xenomorph to the reactor, shutting it down, and tricking the Xenomorph into entering the reactor’s radius when it restarts, frying it and killing it. Stern offers to assist taking down Price in Pharos Spire, while Harper is stable, but with Bookard dead, his chances of survival are uncertain. Hayes decides to attack Price in order to get Cassandra and Marlow’s location. Storming Pharos Spire, and preventing Price from fleeing her office, Hayes confronts Price, determing her to be a synthoid based on her behaviors, which Price denies. Price gives up Cassandra’s location, revealing that Marlow has her in a city underneath Olduvai. Hayes, disgusted with Price’s actions, leaves her to die as a horde of Xenomorphs descend on Price’s office, as Hayes and the Marines leave.

At the same time, the Xenomorphs swarm around the Otago, while Cerbereus prepares to start launching nukes. However, Hayes, determined to atone for serving Weyland Yutani, decides to raid Marlow’s city and save Cassandra. Hayes mobilizes all of the survivinvg Marines and gets the Otago into the air. Returning to Olduvai, the Marines launch an all out attack on the mine, entering its depths, killing another Xenomorph Queen and allowing the Marines’s dropship to land. Hayes, Sergeant Martinez, and Stern enter the city and find the corpse of Marlow who had died to a chestburster long ago. A synthetic copy of Marlow arrives and reveals that Marlow created them in the event of his death to continue his work, and confirming Cassandra’s location. They find Cassandra, where Hayes frees her, before a worm like Xenomorph Queen arrives and kills Martinez. Stern sacrifices himself to give Hayes time to get Cassandra moving and the two escape the Queen to the elevator. At the elevator, they are cornered by the Queen, but Harper, who has regained consciousness, utilizes his powers, and orders the Queen to not attack. The order briefly causes the Queen to cease attacking, allowing Hayes and Cassandra to escape, but the effort winds up killing Harper in the process. The remaining Marines then hold off the swarming Xenomorphs to allow Hayes and Cassandra to enter the dropship and escape sacrificing themselves. The dropship returns to the Otago as the nukes start to fall, and the Otago leaves Lethe’s orbit. The shield takes a brutal beating from Cerbereus, but the shield holds, and the Otago escapes Lethe, as nukes detonate across the planet, wiping out the Xenomorph infestation. Hayes and Cassandra mourn Harper’s death, and the two enter hypersleep, as the Otago enters deep space.
