Battlefield 2042 GAME DETAILS

Battlefield 2042 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. It is the seventeenth installment in the Battlefield series and the successor to 2018’s Battlefield V. The game is scheduled to be released on November 19, 2021, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S. Unlike recent Battlefield games, Battlefield 2042 will be solely multiplayer and will not have a single-player campaign and will feature cross-platform play, a first in the series.

Battlefield™ 2042 is a first-person shooter that marks the return to the iconic all-out warfare of the franchise. Adapt and overcome in a near-future world transformed by disorder. Squad up and bring a cutting-edge arsenal into dynamically-changing battlegrounds supporting 128 players, unprecedented scale, and epic destruction.

The next generation of fan-favorites Conquest and Breakthrough features the largest Battlefield maps ever and up to 128 players. Experience the intensity of all-out warfare on maps filled with dynamic weather and spectacular world events.
Battlefield’s massive, iconic sandbox mode returns – this time supporting 128 players on PC. The maps have been specifically designed for this vast scale, with action divided into “clusters” of various kinds. Also, the action now centers around sectors consisting of several flags instead of individual control points.

The return of Breakthrough sees two teams – Attackers and Defenders – battle over larger-scale sectors as the Attackers push towards the final objective. Each sector is designed to house a larger number of players, enabling more strategic choice and more flanking opportunities. Approach the capture areas from multiple locations and take advantage of more types of tactical possibilities.

Discover unexpected battles and enter the wide universe of Battlefield in a community-driven platform that gives you the power to change the rules of war. The possibilities are endless when you can customize weapons, gear, rules, and more in this creative sandbox mode. Replay classic experiences with select content from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, or leverage the modern content from the world of Battlefield 2042 to discover, create, and share something completely new.

A tense, squad-focused survival experience, Battlefield Hazard Zone combines edge-of-your-seat gameplay with the best of the Battlefield sandbox. Inserted as a four-member squad, you must locate and retrieve critical Data Drives scattered throughout the battlefield, while competing against opposing squads with the same objective and local militias. Succeed by gathering the Data Drives and choosing when to extract before a storm overtakes the area in this high-stakes, one-life experience. Every bullet, every skirmish, and every decision counts.

Similar to its predecessors, Battlefield 2042 is a multiplayer-focused first-person shooter. As the game is set in the near future, it features futuristic weapons and gadgets like deployable turrets and drones, as well as vehicles that players can commandeer.[1] Players can now request a vehicle air-drop to any location. The game also introduces a new “Plus” system which allows players to customize their weapons on the spot. The class system was significantly overhauled. Players can assume control of a specialist who falls under the four traditional Battlefield gameplay classes of Assault, Engineer, Medic and Recon. These characters can wield all the weapons and gadgets players have unlocked. Each operator has their own unique skills and gadgets. For instance, one of the specialists is equipped with a wingsuit, while another is equipped with a healing pistol. The game will launch with 10 specialists. Levolution and destructive environments from Battlefield 4 will return, and extreme weather effects such as tornadoes and sandstorms, which can lift players into a vortex and drastically reduce the visibility respectively, will also be present in Battlefield 2042. The game will feature seven maps at launch.

The game has three main gameplay modes. “All-Out Warfare” encompasses “Breakthrough” and “Conquest”, two staple modes of the series. In Conquest, two teams combat against each other to capture control points; once control points in a sector are captured, the team will control said sector. In Breakthrough, one team must try to capture another team’s control points, while another team must defend them. Both modes can be played with and against artificial intelligence. The PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and Series S versions support 128 players, whereas the PS4 and Xbox One versions only support 64 players. Other modes included in the game are a cooperative multiplayer mode called Hazard Zone, and a community-driven platform called Battlefield Portal. Portal allows players to create customized multiplayer modes and features select maps from past Battlefield games. In addition, players will be able to modify core gameplay elements such as health, weapon loadouts, and movement through a web-based scripting application.

For the first time in the series, Battlefield 2042 will feature support for cross-platform play with the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S versions, while players of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will be restricted to only those playing on the aforementioned platforms.

Battlefield 2042 will not have a single-player campaign. Instead, the story will be told through multiplayer gameplay. Decades of devastation caused by climate change (including the collapse of the European Union and subsequent climate refugees known as “No-Pats”) come to a peak in 2040 when a Kessler syndrome event occurs, causing 70% of orbiting satellites to crash to Earth. The resulting global blackout causes tensions between the United States and Russia to skyrocket, with war breaking out by the year 2042.

Outside of multiplayer gameplay, the story is also told on Electronic Arts’ official website for Battlefield 2042. A standalone short film titled Exodus, which depicts events leading up to the 2042 war and features returning Battlefield 4s character Irish, premiered on August 12, 2021, via Battlefield’s YouTube channel.

The game features one of the final performances of Michael K. Williams, reprising the role of Kimble “Irish” Graves from Battlefield 4.

The game is currently developed by series developer DICE in Sweden, with Ripple Effect Studios, EA Gothenburg, and Criterion Games assisting development. It has the largest development team ever for a Battlefield game, and Criterion had to put the production of the next Need for Speed game on hold in order to assist DICE. Unlike previous installments in the series, the game will not have a traditional single-player campaign. This allowed DICE to allocate more resources to develop the multiplayer portion, which was considered to be the studio’s area of expertise. Instead, the story will be told through the specialists, which are named and fully-voiced characters who have their own story and perspective. The narrative was described as “evolving” as new operators and locations would be added to the game post-release. While the narrative of the game depicts a world ravaged by climate apocalypse, DICE added that the game was not a commentary on climate change and the team only chose this setting for “gameplay reasons”.

As each match can now accommodate more players, the team had significantly expanded the size of the maps. However, instead of simply creating huge maps, the locations in the game were designed based on the idea of “clustering” in order to funnel players towards a particular direction where they can engage with other players. Daniel Berlin, the design director of the game, described the maps as “several smaller maps stitched together”. The decision to include artificial intelligence for the All-out Warfare mode was made early during the game’s development as the team believed that it would be a good entry point for beginners. Ripple Effect, formerly DICE Los Angeles, led the development of Battlefield Portal. The game runs on the latest iteration of the Frostbite engine.

A short work-in-progress demonstration of the game was shown at the 2020 EA Play Live event, teasing large scale battles and detailed facial animations. The game was officially announced on June 9, 2021. An open beta took place from October 6 to 9, 2021, ahead of the game’s official launch on November 19, 2021, for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S. The launch was delayed from its original October 22 release date due to impacts from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The game would adopt the battle pass model, as EA planned to support the game extensively with downloadable content upon launch. Gameplay content would be free for all players, whereas players who purchased the battle pass would receive additional cosmetic items.
