Blood Bowl 3 Game Details
Blood Bowl 3 is an upcoming turn-based fantasy sports video game developed by Cyanide Studios and published by Nacon. It is a sequel to the 2015 video game Blood Bowl 2, based on the Blood Bowl board game by Games Workshop. The game is scheduled to be released on 23 February 2023 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, with a Nintendo Switch port to follow sometime later in 2023.
The game will use the newly updated Second Edition ruleset. It will contain a single-player campaign as well as multiplayer.
GAMEPLAY
The game is a fantasy version of American football, played between two teams of up to 16 players, each team fielding up to 11 players at a time. Touchdowns are scored by taking the ball into the opposition’s end zone. Players may attempt to injure, maim or kill the opposition in order to make scoring easier by reducing the number of enemy players on the field.
STORY
Put on your cleats, buckle on your helmet, adjust your shoulder pads and breast plate… and (discreetly) tuck a sharp dagger into your belt.
War disappeared in the Old World when the inhabitants decided to resolve their differences by playing the god Nuffle’s sacred sport: Blood Bowl. And yet it is no less bloody than the battlefields it has replaced. Murder, mutilation, cheating, corruption, sorcery and even divine intervention come one after another on the pitch, to the delight of everyone watching!
- Merciless, not brainless – Take charge of a team from amongst the 12 available races, each with unique characteristics, and stop your opponents from advancing by carefully positioning your players. Dodge or mercilessly eliminate whoever gets in your way and reach the end zone to score the decisive touchdown! Naturally, the best strategists should have an edge, but… who knows? A rampaging troll might eat a teammate and change the course of a match.
- You’re the boss – Create your team, recruit your players, customize their appearance, emblems and armour, recruit cheerleaders and a coach, then take part in the most ferocious competitions in the Old World. But beware: injuries are commonplace, and it’s more than likely that some of your players will be carried off the field in a body bag, bringing a definitive end to a once-promising career…

Competitive modes with endless possibilities
In addition to the campaign and friendly matches against other players or the AI, Blood Bowl 3 has a brand-new competitive mode which lets you compete against players of all levels, from around the world:
- Competitive seasons with an official ladder
- Players can join a league, with new management options and the possibility of creating and configuring your own tournaments the way you want (stadiums, pitches, timing, races, etc.)
- Regular challenges with temporary game modes
Development
Cyanide had created the previous two Blood Bowl video games: Blood Bowl (released 2009) and Blood Bowl 2 (released 2014). They had gained the license to create the games following an out of court settlement with Games Workshop over similarities between Blood Bowl and Cyanide’s 2004 game Chaos League.
In 2016, Games Workshop began supporting and releasing miniatures for the Blood Bowl board game after a 22 year hiatus. On 27 November 2020, they released a new ruleset called Blood Bowl Second Season Edition which saw new rosters and rules introduced to the game. This meant that Blood Bowl 2 was outdated and using old rules and as such a new Blood Bowl game would have to be created to allow players to play the newly updated and current version of the game.
The game was originally intended for release in August 2021 but in June 2021 this was pushed back to February 2022. The delay announcement was accompanied with a trailer showcasing the games campaign. A closed beta was run between the 3rd and 13 June 2021 which required registering for. There was to be an early access release for PC in September 2021 but Cyanide announced an “indefinite delay”. In November 2021, Nacon announced that the February 2022 release date was being further postponed due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and that the game would be released “later in 2022”. In January 2022, Nacon announced that the game would no longer have an early access release as originally planned and would instead run another closed beta from 25 January to 2 February with a final full release on PC and consoles later in the year. Only players who had registered for the June 2021 closed beta had access. Another beta was held for PC between the 1 and 12 June 2022.
In November 2022, Nacon announced that the game would release on 23 February 2023 on all platforms except Nintendo Switch which would come out later in 2023. A new gameplay trailer was shown at the The Game Awards 2022.
