Mortal Kombat 1 Game Details

Mortal Kombat 1 is a fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. It will be the twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series, serving as both a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 (2019) and the series’ second reboot, following Mortal Kombat (2011). The game is set to be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19, 2023.

GAMEPLAY

Mortal Kombat 1 has been confirmed to feature a story mode, online multiplayer with rollback netcode, and offline gameplay. The game will introduce a feature called Kameo Fighters, which will provide assistance to the player during fights. These characters will be separate from the main roster, and chosen before each fight. Additionally, the Air Kombat combo system which was featured in both Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and the action spin-off Shaolin Monks returns, and is being refined for this game.

STORY

Following the defeat of Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11 and Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Fire God Liu Kang recreates the universe and relinquishes control of the Hourglass to Geras as its guardian. Liu Kang takes up the mantle of protector of Earthrealm, entering into a fragile peace with Outworld under the auspices of the continuation of the Mortal Kombat tournaments. In the present day, Liu Kang chooses Kung Lao, Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi for training. Raiden is chosen to represent Earthrealm as its champion and wins the tournament.

Geras arrives at the Fire Temple and consults Liu Kang, informing him of Shang Tsung’s return, who is acting as an advisor to Empress Sindel under the guidance of an unknown benefactor. Concerned, Liu Kang tasks Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Johnny Cage to investigate his activities. They encounter the sorcerer in Outworld when his troops assault a Tarkatan safe haven with the purpose of extracting bone marrow from Baraka. When the group intervenes, Shang Tsung flees to his laboratory and Baraka agrees to aid them. Baraka reveals that his people were banished to the wastelands as their affliction can infect anyone in consistent close contact and that Shang Tsung had been collecting bone marrow from his people for months.

The group investigates Shang Tsung’s lab and find him preparing to administer a serum to Mileena, who is shown to be infected by the Tarkat virus. Mileena attacks the group and blinds Kenshi before the dose can be administered. When Kitana and General Shao arrive, they arrest the party; Shang Tsung misleads them before consulting with Quan Chi, who is also working for Shang Tsung’s mysterious contact. The group escape the flesh pits with help from Reptile and encounter Ashrah, who reveals Quan Chi is building devices capable of stealing souls on a mass scale. They encounter Quan Chi as he activates the device, summoning Ermac in a ritual. Upon defeating him, the group with the exception of Baraka escape back to Earthrealm with help from Reptile. Liu Kang orders Lin Kuei assassins Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Smoke to destroy the soul stealers and capture Shang Tsung at Ying Fortress. They are subsequently captured, and Sub-Zero betrays Scorpion when Shang Tsung seduces the former with promises of a legion of undead warriors comprising Emperor Ying’s Dragon Army; Scorpion and Smoke are able to make a quick escape. Geras informs Liu Kang that a fracture in time has occurred, and that Shang Tsung’s unknown benefactor arrived from a parallel timeline.

Liu Kang travels to Outworld and meets Li Mei, Sindel, Kitana, Mileena, and Tanya, providing the group with evidence of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi’s collusion and intent to conquer both Earthrealm and Outworld. They encounter Ermac again, and after his defeat, his curse is lifted, allowing Jerrod, Sindel’s late husband to take control of Ermac’s body and return to life. Successfully destroying the soul stealers, they confront Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. The benefactor arrives and is revealed to be Titan Shang Tsung, specifically the Shang Tsung from Aftermath’s second ending where he defeats Liu Kang and conquers his timeline, with Revenants under his control. The sorcerer reveals that their battle fractured time and created two different timelines with a different victor in each outcome and plans to kill everyone in Liu Kang’s new timeline before absorbing it into his own. He flees after raising the remainder of the undead army; Sindel is mortally wounded by her dark alternate in the process and names Mileena Empress of Outworld before dying.

Liu Kang and the rest of the group form a temporary alliance with Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, and proposes investigating if other timelines may exist where they can collect allies to raise an army of their own. Liu Kang reclaims his power as Keeper of Time and collects other Titans from their timelines such as Kitana, Kung Lao, and Raiden before confronting Titan Shang Tsung at the Pyramid of Argus. Titan Shang Tsung summons his army, beginning a battle of Armageddon. The allied forces are successful in holding back Titan Shang Tsung’s army, culminating in a battle between Liu Kang with a Titan character the player chooses and Titan Shang Tsung with a Titan Quan Chi at the top of the pyramid. Titan Shang Tsung is defeated, and Liu Kang subsequently erases him from existence. With Titan Shang Tsung dead, a temporal loop is created which threatens to destroy the timeline, prompting Liu Kang to return the warriors to their original timelines. Back in Earthrealm, Liu Kang thanks Johnny Cage, Kenshi, Raiden, and Kung Lao over dinner before departing to assist Scorpion, who has founded the Shirai Ryu clan, and prepare Earthrealm for future conflicts.

In a post-credits scene, Chaosrealm warriors from another timeline under the command of Havik arrive at the pyramid and survey the destruction caused by the battle. Titan Havik vows that “next time, the battle won’t end quickly”.

Development

After ceasing support for Mortal Kombat 11 (2019), NetherRealm Studios disclosed that it was working on a new project in July 2021. Johnny Cage voice actor Andrew Bowen indicated that the 12th installment was in development in a hastily deleted tweet. In February 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced during a 2022 fourth-quarter earnings call that a twelfth installment in the series was set to be released later in that year.

On May 18, 2023, NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat 1 with a release date of September 19, 2023. It is the second reboot of the series and is set in the New Era timeline created by Liu Kang after he attained godhood in Mortal Kombat 11. NetherRealm Studios announced that those who preorder any version of the game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will receive access to a beta in August, and after the game launches, NetherRealm Studios will provide cross-play and cross-progression. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game are being developed by NetherRealm Studios, the Windows version by QLOC, and the Nintendo Switch version by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive.

In August 2023, Dave Bautista appeared in a trailer for the game, homaging the 1993 “Mortal Monday” commercial for the original Mortal Kombat (1992). The following month, Megan Fox was revealed to be voicing Nitara.
