Steelrising Game Details
Set during the French Revolution, STEELRISING tells an alternate history story concerning Aegis, a robot assigned to be bodyguard to Queen Marie-Antoinette, who fears for herself and her country as France’s mad king uses robot armies to wreak havoc on the land. Aegis a feminine-styled automaton is loyal to the queen, not the king, and follows her orders to enter Paris and join in the fight. The game’s focus is combat, with Aegis tasked to take on a range of increasingly powerful and agile enemy robots using a variety of ranged and melee weapons. Players navigate maze-like streets and corridors, fighting robots while keeping an eye out for treasure that might include grenades, new weapons and gear, restorative oil cans, and Anima Essence a resource you can use to level up Aegis and increase her attributes to make her stronger. It’s designed to be a very demanding game, but players can modify difficulty settings to make it much more approachable, including turning off a mechanic that sees players lose all of their Anima Essence they’ve yet to spend when they die.
GAMEPLAY
The city burns and bleeds as it suffers the madness of King Louis XVI and his violent legions of automatons. Aegis, a mechanical masterpiece created by the engineer Vaucanson to be the queen’s bodyguard, must save the French Revolution in this challenging action-RPG.
CHALLENGING COMBAT BETWEEN AUTOMATONS
Up against the king’s mechanical soldiers, deadly accuracy will be needed. String together dodges, parries, jumps and devastating attacks to fight your way through Paris. Every fight will test your nerve and requires excellent discipline, while the huge relentless machine bosses demand patience and skill.
AEGIS: A CHARACTER WITH EXTRAORDINARY SKILLS
Define your own style and upgrade your abilities as you progress through the game. You can play as a ruthless warrior, a hard-hitting bodyguard, a deadly dancer or a virtuoso of the elemental arts. Take advantage of a wide variety of weapons and skills to approach each fight in your own unique way.
REVOLUTIONARY PARIS IS YOUR PLAYGROUND
Using carriages, grapples, secret passages, a detailed map, and other methods and tools you find along the way, explore a city experiencing its darkest days. Your grappling hook adds a new dimension to exploration and Paris’s verticality. Combined with your dash ability, it will provide access to all the city’s secrets across multiple levels you can explore over and over again.
CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY
You are one of the main characters of an alternative history where Paris is being choked by a tyrant king. Allies and enemies with unclear motives will cross your path, such as Marie-Antoinette, Lafayette and Robespierre. It’s up to you to cut a path through all the plotting and put an end to one man’s madness so that the French Revolution succeeds.
STORY
Steelrising is set in an alternate-history version of the French Revolution. The player assumes the role of Aegis, a female automaton and bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette. The queen wants Aegis to find her creator in order to end the massacres carried out by the robot army of a tyrannical King Louis XVI. Aegis has weapons integrated into her body, ranging from those on her arm for light combat, to alchemical rifles and heavier weapons.
The game involves exploration of the environment, with an emphasis on vertical movement. Items can be discovered and used to upgrade Aegis, either to increase her power, agility or durability. Both familiar and new monuments can be seen as Aegis makes her way through Paris, such as the Grand Chatelet and the Tour du Temple.
Development
Spiders is a French video game developer founded by developers who previously worked on the game Silverfall. They specialize in action role-playing games, owing to their previous experience. In July 2019, French publisher Bigben Interactive, now known as Nacon, announced that they had acquired Spiders. In addition to its role as service provider to other developers, in particular by porting games to Xbox 360, the studio has specialized in a specific genre, namely role-playing games.
