House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin for HBO. Serving as a prequel to Game of Thrones, it is based on material from Martin’s book Fire & Blood. Set roughly 200 years before the events of the original series, the show chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the devastating civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, and the fierce conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Team Black) and Aegon II Targaryen (Team Green) for control of the Iron Throne.

Following the monumental and explosive events of the second season, the third season accelerates the scale of the war. The narrative shifts into high gear with massive naval engagements like the Battle of the Gullet, major political upheavals in King’s Landing, and the shifting loyalties of the dragonseeds. STORY

Episodes 01

PRODUCTION

Development

In December 2023, author George R. R. Martin confirmed that writing for the third and fourth seasons was already underway. Ahead of the second-season premiere in June 2024, HBO officially renewed House of the Dragon for a third season. Ryan Condal took over as the sole showrunner for this season, streamlining the creative direction following Miguel Sapochnik’s departure after season 1.

Production and filming for the eight-episode season officially commenced on March 21, 2025, primarily shooting at Leavesden Studios in Watford alongside various international locations, wrapping principal photography in October 2025. Expanding on the massive ensemble cast, season 3 welcomed major high-profile talent additions, including James Norton as Lord Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin, and Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly. Following the conclusion of season 3 in August 2026, HBO officially ordered the fourth and final season in late 2025.
